Cold Sores Essential Oil Tea Tree OilCold sores also known as fever blisters come from herpes simplex which is a virus infection that stays dormant in the body until the immune system is weakened because of a cold, stress, lack of vitamins etc. There are two main types of herpes simplex. One breaks out around the mouth and is referred to as a cold sore or fever blister. The other type is called genital herpes and erupts in the genitalia area. Both are very contagious and both can occur in either area of the body.

In this article we will discuss how to use oils to prevent or eliminate the symptoms of the first type of herpes simplex, cold sores. Often times people that get cold sores will often see them around the time they experience a cold or during a stressful time. To help prevent what triggers the cold sore essential oils can help us remain less stressed and prevent a cold. Also the oils can also be used to eliminate the cold sore.

Suggested Oils to Use

Clove, Geranium, Lavender, Melaleuca (Tea Tree Oil), Melissa, Peppermint

Also consider: Bergamot, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Lemon, Myrrh, Sandalwood, Thyme

Suggested Ways to use

Topically – Apply 1 – 2 drops of any suggested oil to the cold sore area as often as every 2 hours and no less than 3 times a day. Continue for at least 3 days after symptoms are gone. People with cold sores have highly recommended Melaleuca, Melissa, and Peppermint. Lavender, Myrrh, or a mixture of Frankincense and Sandalwood can also be used. For small children diluting the oils 50/50 with an oil such as coconut oil or olive oil.

Internally – Additional protection against cold sores can be achieved by adding 1-2 drops of Melissa or other antiviral oils to a capsule and taking 3 times per day.

Additional help – Herpes outbreaks usually occur when the body’s immune system is weakened by a cold/flu or emotional stress. Strengthening the immune system and emotions is very helpful when reducing the chances of outbreaks. Doing an internal cleanse and/or maintaining vitamins will help with long term protection against herpes simplex symptoms.

Special Precautions: When applying oils keep hands away from other areas where viral infection may be transmitted, including the eyes. With genital herpes, it is wise to seek the help of a licensed health professional.
