Addictions include substances such as drugs, alcohol, tobacco, pharmaceuticals as well as less threatening substances such as pop, chocolate, sugars, or even food itself. Also considered addictive are certain behavioral items such as gambling, sex, internet and other habits that cannot be controlled and may develop a dependency.

Symptoms or side effects of addictions is the feeling of a compelling need to continue the activity. This then can lead to feelings of guilt, hopelessness, and anxiety. As addictions are addressed withdrawal symptoms such as cravings, irritability, headaches, nausea, etc. can develop.

Essential oils can help resolve, reduce cravings, and address many negative symptoms that come from an addiction.

Suggested Oils to Use

Cravings: Clove, Cilantro, Cinnamon, Grapefruit, Peppermint

Anxiety: Lavender, Ylang Ylang

Withdrawal: Lavender, Grapefruit, Marjoram, Sandalwood, Orange, other citrus oils

Alcohol: Helichrysum, Rosemary

Caffeine: Basil (Energy drinks: Grapefruit)

Drugs: Grapefruit, Chamomile. (Marijuana: Basil)

Food: Grapefruit

Pornography: Frankincense, Helichrysum

Sex: Geranium, Sandalwood

Sugar: Grapefruit

Tobacco: Clove, Black Pepper

Workaholic: Basil, Geranium, Lavender, Marjoram, Orange, Ylang Ylang

Suggested Ways to use

• Cravings – Use an inhaler (empty ones may be purchased and loaded with any essential oil) with an essential oil from the list above and inhale deeply as cravings come on. Applying to the feet also helps. Application techniques others have suggested or found successful are:

• Sugar – Grapefruit in water, capsule, straight or topically with a carrier. Some recommend 5-7 drops 3 to 4 times daily. This protocol has helped some people loose weight.

• Tobacco – Clove essential oil. Also mentioned was putting Cassia or Cinnamon in water and drinking when confronted with an urge to smoke or chew or putting a drop on your finger and then your tongue.

Some research suggests the aroma of Black Pepper essential oil can help reduce cravings for smoking. Put a few drops in a cup and inhale to reduce cravings.

• Tobacco chew – Cilantro and see Tobacco above.

• Anxiety – Topical application of one of these oils to the chest and/or wrists during the day. Some rotate the oils. You may find one is best. Evenings apply topically Lavender to the bottoms of the feet for improved sleep.
